7 Random Things

My friend Sara tagged my for this 7 Random Things Meme.....

1. I get grief from many people about the extent of my organizational skills - I guess the spreadsheets to plan my annual Christmas party just push me over the edge :-)

2. I have issues with textures of several foods - mushrooms amd tomatoes are at the top of the list. I might enjoy the taste, but can't get over the texture, so I avoid these foods like the plague.

3. I have an interesting collection.....one that most people are surprised at, so I'll consider that a random fact about me. I blogged about that collection here.

4. I like motorcyles - I have my license and hope to own a Harley someday. This seems out of character for me, so most folks are shocked by this.

5. I will complain about doing yardwork, but I'm too cheap to pay someone to do it for me. (I watered my yard for the very first time tonight - I've been in my house for 18 months.....) I will also complain about housework, but I am NOT too cheap to pay someone to do it for me! :-)

6. I'm a pretty tech savvy girl, but I still ask my tech-genius daddy for help all the time!

7. I have a decent eye for style and design, but the idea of picking out tile (and now paint!) for my bathroom remodel has about put my stomach into knots.

Ok, enough for the random-ness today.

Time

You are 10:02 a.m.

You are breakfasty, like a pile of pancakes on a Sunday morning that have just the right amount of syrup, so every bite is sweet perfection and not a soppy mess. You are a glass of orange juice that's cool, refreshing, and not overly pulpy. You are the time of day that's just right for turning the pages of a newspaper, flipping through channels, or clicking around online to get a sense of how the world changed during the night. You don't want to stumble sleepily through life, so you make a real effort to wake your brain up and get it thinking. You feel inspired to accomplish things (whether it's checking something off your to-do list or changing the world), but there's plenty of time for making things happen later in the day. First, pancakes.

12% of the people who took this quiz got the same evaluation.

The 1500s

No idea if there is any truth to these or not, but they sound right anyway!

Next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s:

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath> water.

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying: It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor.

The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the saying a thresh hold.

(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Some times stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a ...dead ringer...

And that's the truth...Now, whoever said history was boring ! ! !

I am......

You Are Flip Flops

You are laid back and very friendly.
Cheery and sunny in disposition, you usually have something to smile about.

Style is important to you, as long as you can stay casual. It takes a lot to get you to dress up!

You are a loyal and true person, though you can be a bit of a flake. You tend to "play hooky" and blow off responsibilities a lot more than most people.

You should live: By the beach

You should work: At a casual up and coming company

Question Answers pt 3

Donna asked
Did you become an accountant on purpose or did you just happen into it?

A little of both.....my grandmother had an accounting degree and my granddaddy was a bank auditor, so I'm at least somewhat wired for dealing with money. I took accounting as an elective in high school and it just clicked with my brain. Competing in UIL and taking an advanced accounting course in high school cemented the gift. I started college with accounting as my major and never looked back.

Amy asked
What is the next major project for your house?

Next major project is re-doing my master bathroom. I bet it was redone sometime late 80s-early 90s. Gold and shell shaped fixtures, mauvy-pink and white tile. Ick. Thinking along the lines of white subway tile in the shower and larger white (travertine?) tile on the floor. New pedestal sink, light fixture, toilet, etc. Probably will be a late spring/early summer project.

If you could go anywhere on your next vacation, where would you go?

I love vacations.....so if I could choose anywhere, it would be England/Scotland. I think Italy is actually higher on my list, but I think I would rather experience that with a love interest, rather than just a solo (or even family) vacation.....

Terri asked
What was the first record (cassette, cd... you're so young) that you bought?

I can't even remember! I've recently been transferring old cassette tapes to mp3 files and ran across a couple of New Kids on the Block tapes....that was probably some of the first of a band that I was really interested in!

What topic would you like to study about in Bible study?

how to find contentment and trust completely in God's power, plan and love

Question Answers pt 2

Donna asked:
If you had to live in another country which country would you chose...and why?

Probably somewhere that speaks english (only because I don't have a head for languages).....anywhere in Europe so that I could easily traipse across history. Or maybe Australia - that accent really makes me warm and fuzzy.

Amy asked:
What is your favorite comfort food?

Depends on how you define comfort food -- I can always anytime eat breakfast. So, I would probably consider that my comfort food -- eggs, bacon, biscuts, gravy, pancakes, waffles etc.

As far as warm filling cozy comfort food....mom's potato soup will always hit the spot.

Terri asked:
Who was your favorite teacher?

I have several ones that I might call favorite, but probably my high school accounting teacher, Mrs. Damron and my college accounting chair, Mr. Fowler -- both had significant impact on my career choice and were just very supportive encouraging teachers

When you were much younger, what did you want to grow up to be?

My mom had a "school book" where she put photos and information about each school year along the way....one of the pieces of information was what I wanted to be when I grew up. From my rememberance of the book, I wanted to be everything -- teacher, fireman, astronaut, etc. But mostly, I just wanted to grow up and be a mom. I still do.

The 7 Meme.....

I've been tagged by Sarah to complete the following meme.....

Here are the rules: Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their seven things, as well as these rules. You need to choose 7 people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them that they have been tagged and to read your blog!

1. Habit -- I am a habitual snoozer.....seriously. I'll set my alarm 30-60 minutes ahead of when I really need to get up so that I can punch the snooze button repeatedly.

2. Fact -- I have my motorcycle license and plan to own a Harley-Davidson some day.

3. Habit -- I pop pretty much every joint possible - neck, back, knees, toes, and especially fingers.

4. Fact -- I do not have a green thumb. Though I enjoy live plants, I have a really hard time keeping them alive.
