Home Search

So, how do you know when a house is "the one?" I saw a great duplex tonight -- huge, lots of potential, just a few possible question marks. But, I feel like I haven't really been able to see a lot of options, because of my location and price restrictions. (Basically I don't want to increase my commute -- but I can't pay an arm and a leg either!) So, how do I know if I should step off that high dive??

For me, when I was house hunting, it was very helpful to have family and friends come along, particularly when I was considering buying the house I ultimately bought. They could often spot potential problems that I might not have considered. Keep in mind that the age and condition of the house is a big factor as well. If you buy an older home or a "fixer-upper" at a low price, you'll still be shelling out bucks for maintenance and repairs. (Of course, even if you buy a new home you'll still be doing that!) There are always expenses--pest control, unexpected repairs, etc.--that most people don't think about when buying a house--they just think about the projected monthly payments.

Don't forget to PRAY about this house search as well! And ask others to be praying about it, too.

Even though I knew this house was "the one", I still felt like I was going to throw up after my closing, when the reality that I was now a home-owner (and the responsibilities that came with that) hit me. But I've been reassured that that is a normal reaction to taking such a big step! I don't at all regret having bought a house. It takes a lot of work, sometimes more than I'd like it to, but it's truly been worth it.

Good luck in your search!

When I walked in the back door, I knew I was home. I just knew.

I don't know anything about purchasing a home, but God be with you.

Jenni!

I just tripped over your blog! So glad to find you! I hope you're doing well! I'm dog tired at the moment so I'll come back and read later but I just wanted to say hello!

By the way - get a house! You'll be glad you did come tax time! Kelly and I have gotten a tax refund ever since we became home owners 3 years ago. Cha-ching!

Have a good one,
